Brussels is keeping a very close watch on Spain and the economic decisions and progress being made here. The European Commission is to send nine technician missions to Spain to revise the accounts and Spain will be the object of special attention in meetings and summits. Spain will be under close inspection in the meetings of the Eurogroup, Ecofin and head of state summits. The nine expert missions will arrive in Madrid in the middle of April when they will analyse the public accounts of all the autonomous regions where many of Spain’s problems are thought to reside. The notable increase in the deficit in 2011 and the change in the deficit target for this year of 5.8% of GDP has led the European Commission to take the decision to subject Spain to future strict vigilance.
