Speeding British drivers are facing a crackdown on the Spanish Costas

Speeding British drivers are facing a crackdown on the Spanish Costas to ensure they pay their fines before they return home from their holidays.
Traffic chiefs tired of binning penalty notices they know will never be paid have devised a new system to fine them on the spot.
Fixed cameras have been fitted with high-tech devices which alert the nearest police car immediately when foreign drivers are speeding to give them the chance to chase them down.
The satellite-controlled devices distinguish Spanish-plated cars from vehicles with foreign number plates.

The Costa Nostra | Olive Press Newspaper

The Costa Nostra | Olive Press Newspaper: "Seeing a fight break out his natural instinct was to jump in and break it up. But what the Irish builder couldn’t know was that one of the men he helped to hold back was a dangerous figure, wanted by police in the UK for kidnapping and robbery.
Bar staff ordered the man to leave the premises, but within minutes he had returned with a .38-calibre pistol and indiscriminantly fired off half a dozen shots in and around the bar, one of which hit Mr O’Neill in the back and killed him.
Police are now on the hunt for Scouser, Darren O’Flaherty, 35, who they suspect of carrying out the shooting.
Sadly the incident was anything but rare on the Costa del Sol, which has seen dozens of similar gangland-style shootings – many reported in the Olive Press – over the last few years.
Often dubbed the ‘Costa del Crime’ back home in the UK, just days earlier a 33-year-old British man was lucky to survive after being shot three times through the window of his Mijas home as he watched TV.
Police discovered an arsenal – including explosives and grenadesEqually disturbing was the gangland-style execution of 26-year-old Briton Dan Smith, who was killed at point blank range outside The Lounge Bar in Mijas, in June."

Holidaymakers have been banned from swimming on popular beaches in Spain

Holidaymakers have been banned from swimming on popular beaches in Spain after swarms of jellyfish have plagued the coastline.
Several beaches on the Costa Blanca, north of Alicante, have been shut to swimmers because of the worst invasion of Mauve Stinger jellyfish for two years.
The bright purple jellyfish deliver only mild stings, but they can cause severe allergic reactions and can even lead to heart failure in some people.
The Red Cross treated 50 people for the effects of stings in just half an hour on a beach in Denia. It fears the numbers of people requiring treatment could reach the record of 2008, when 4,000 people were needed treatment in Denia alone.
Denia is one of the most popular resorts on the Costa Blanca, a region which attracts around two million tourists ever year - 800,000 of them from Britain.
Environment Ministry boats are patrolling the Mediterranean along the coastline on the lookout for the swarms of invertebrates as they drift towards the shore.
The numbers of Mauve Stinger jellyfish have increased over the last few years, due to the effects of global warming and overfishing of their natural predators.
Every year tens of thousands of holidaymakers require treatment for stings.
Marine experts have this year also found an increase in the number of box jellyfish along the Costa Brava.
More commonly found in the tropical waters of the Caribbean, box jellyfish deliver a painful sting that can leave an itching burning welt that lasts up to three weeks.
Professor Just Bayle, head of marine sciences at the University of Alicante, told the Daily Telegraph: 'We are surprised by the sudden explosive growth in numbers of this species.
'They are concentrated in areas of lower salinity, such as is found off Denia, where freshwater flows into the sea.'
